MassBay Community College

MassBay is a comprehensive, open-access community college, offering over 70 associate degree and certificate programs. The College is dedicated to providing rigorous programs of study and unified support services that promote student retention, graduation, transfer, and employment. The Mission of the Early Childhood programs at MassBay Community College is to prepare a competent, qualified, knowledgeable and diverse workforce, improve the quality of area ECE programs and schools that serve children and families, and provide access to training and career ladders, including transfer to four-year institutions, to a diverse student body.

Highlights: MassBay’s early childhood certificates (both preschool and infant/toddler) and A.S. degree in ECE serve both entry level students and practitioners in the field seeking to improve their knowledge and skills or attain teacher or lead teacher qualification. Additional coursework enables teachers to obtain Director I and II certification. Many continue from certificate to degree program and often transfer into non-licensure bachelor’s degree programs. The Liberal Arts: ECE A.A. degree provides a strong foundation for students whose goal is transfer and eventual PreK-2 licensure. Classes are taught by faculty who bring diverse experiences from the field into the classroom, and courses include ample opportunities for students to engage in practice themselves. Student learning outcomes for both degree programs are directly aligned with the NAEYC Standards for Professional Preparation.

Resources available: Students have access to all Federal and State scholarship and grant opportunities.

Student Supports provided: The college has both credit and non-credit ESL courses as well as Writing and Math centers and peer tutors. The full-time ECE faculty provide advising to all students in Education majors. They are assisted by a part-time ECE mentor who provides outreach to practitioners in the field as well as on campus.
